What is an Off-Grid System?

Off-grid solar refers to a solar power system that is not connected to the electrical grid. It is a stand-alone system that generates and stores electricity using solar panels, batteries, and an inverter.

Is going Off-Grid worth it?

The short is answer is, in most situations it is hard to justify.

If your property's location is remote and there is a constrained grid with strict export limits, it may be smart to install an off-grid system for energy security, supplementing the grid. Additionally, if your property has no access to grid power then Off-grid is an ideal way to become self sufficient. A good example is our Cooler classrooms project, where we installed Off-Grid systems to classrooms, completely powered by solar panels and stored in storage systems in remote areas with limited grid exports.

However, if you are based in suburbia with a solid connection to the grid, then going Off-Grid is probably not the optimal solution. We would recommend installing solar panels and a battery system on grid, so you are primarily using clean self sufficient energy, whilst having the grid there as a backup in the case of multiple events preventing renewable energy production - clouds, rain etc.

Keeping all this in mind, Virtual Power Plants (VPP's) are becoming more apparent every day, and as new technologies emerge, they will continue removing opportunities for less conventional feed-in-tariffs.
